Brassavola
Orchid Care
Brassavolas
are star shaped Orchids that come from Central America. Named
after a Venetian botanist, Dr. Angelo Brassavolo, these Orchids
carry a large decorated lip as part of their flower structure.
Flowers range from 1 to 5 inches in diameter, and are usually
white to yellow with brown markings. Brassavolas can be grown
in the home but are more often grown in greenhouses outside,
in the home, or under lights.
Brassavola Orchid Care Preferences
Humidity
Brassavola
Orchids grow best with a humidity
tray
underneath them and 60-70% humidity.
Light
and Air
Brassavolas
prefer bright light, similar to light Cattleya Orchids prefer.
2000-3000 foot candles is ideal if you have a light meter. As
with all Orchids, air circulation is important.
Watering
Brassavolas
do not like to dry out fully between waterings. Water just before
they near drying out, and regularly. Fertilize 3 out of 4 waterings
with a weakened Orchid fertilizer solution.
Temperature
Brassavola
Orchids on average do not like below 55-60 degrees F. During
the day they prefer warmer temperatures.
Potting
and Repotting
Repot every
two to three years as necessary with medium to large bark. Brassavolas
also often like to be mounted on a piece of bark or a tree fern.
