If you're a beginning orchid grower I'd recommend starting with a Phalaenopsis. Our second choice for a plant to start with is a Dendrobium. Both of these orchids generally bloom for about 3 months once or twice a year!

A Little More Info.
There are many kinds of orchids you can choose from to grow. Here's a summary of some main orchid types:

Phalaenopsis - Care is easy, flower spike blooms for about 2-3 months, shade preferred.
Dendrobium - Care can be easy to not so easy, flower spike blooms 2-3 months. Bright light preferred.

Oncidium - Care is easy to intermediate easy, flower spike blooms 2 months, sunny window preferred.
Cattleya - Care is intermediate, flowers bloom 2 weeks, sunny window preferred.
Miltonia - Care is intermediate, flowers bloom about a month, indirect sunlight preferred.
Paphiopedilums - Warm ones - care is easy to intermediate, flowers bloom a couple months, shade preferred. Cool ones - care is intermediate, flowers bloom 2 months, shade preferred.
Vanda - Care is intermediate to hard, flowers bloom about 2 months, sun preferred.

Important tip: When an orchid is done flowering, cut the flower spike about 1" up from the base and it should rebloom again if taken care of well.

Our Favorite Books

The two most informative overall Orchid Books that we recommend are Orchid Grower’s Companion: Cultivation, Propagation, and Varieties and Flora's Orchids.
